Legend: Rathnavathi, a pregnant woman was nearing labor and the labour pain started and become unbearable. Her mother who is suppose to come to her house to help her delivering the baby hasn't arrived. Rathnavathi pleads Lord Shiva to help her in delivering the baby. Shiva took the form of her mother and helps her in delivering the baby without any pain. Thus Lord Shiva @ Rockfort temple called Thayum ana Swamy (The lord Who become mother) hence the temple began to be called as "Thayumanaswamy temple"
